Cuba Fishing Outfitters specializes in helping anglers from the US travel to Cuba to experience some of the best fishing on the planet. With this island nation being virtually off-limits to Americans for the past 50 years, the infrastructure and information for US travel is near non-existent. .
I first went to Cuba in the late 1990's, a guest of Avalon. I fished the nearly unknown Jardines de la Reina, photographing it, writing about it, and passing the word along to friends. Since then, I have fished all of the marine areas around Cuba multiple times, and helped many travelers realize their dream of visiting. I have a unique and close relationship with the outfitters for these fishing areas. This relationship gives me firsthand access in booking the destination, and accommodations, that will be right for you. It is no secret that the relationship between the United States and Cuba is undergoing change. CFO can help you navigate those changes, and organize all the pieces that can make traveling difficult when you do not know the terrain.
I should, I suppose, introduce myself. My name is Jon Covich. I have been in and around the fly fishing industry for the past 25 years, most of that time as a manufacturers rep of fly fishing products. Before my career in fishing actually started, I had the travel bug and visited many of the world's exotic locations. During my travels, I developed a passion for photography, and that carried over to my trips as an angler. With a passion for both fly fishing and photography, I have been lucky enough to visit many of the world's best fly fishing destinations.
For the past several years, I have been immersed in the fishing travel business. I have learned from some of the best, and feel that I have a unique skill set for this business. Most importantly, I understand customer service. Many years on the sales floor at Nordstrom, and 2 plus decades as a sales rep have made this the first priority. Furthermore, my many years as an avid angler, fishing traveler, and tackle rep have taught me a lot about fly fishing. There are many knowledgable people in this industry, but maybe not a lot who have the unique combination of experience that I bring to the table.
As for Cuba, I have to say that I am in love with it. The flats fishing is simply at the very top of the destinations around the world. As with many destinations, however, Cuba is complicated. There are many choices when it comes to the actual fishing destinations and accommodations. And secondly, the seasons change, and one is often different than the other when it comes to the fish and the fishing. In addition, different clients have different wants and needs. My experience in traveling to Cuba, and having visited nearly all of the fishing areas multiple times, allows me to give honest answers based on experience. Lastly, this is Cuba. The travel situation is still unique, and by no means straightforward. Those challenges are things I have dealt with and understand.
Lastly, don't forget to visit Cuba when you visit Cuba! In other words, this trip should include more than just the fishing. Havana is fascinating, and many other cities around the island are incredible. Life in Cuba is truly different than what most of us know, and it is worth seeing. I have experience with day to day travels as an American in Cuba, and can help plan the rest of your trip.
